Crochet Snake With Written Pattern

SNAKE

Information you'll need

Finished size

Approximately 1 3/4 yds (1.6m) from head to tail.

Materials:

King Cole Merino Blend DK, 100% wool
(123 yds/112m per 50 g ball)
2x50g balls in 925 Beige (A)
1x50g balls in 796 Bech (B)
1x50g balls in 023 chocolate (c)
Oddments of Dk yarn in Pink and Deep Red
2.5 mm (UK 12:USB/1-c/2) and 3 mm (UK11:USC/2-D/3)
Crochet hooks
Daning needle
Toy stuffing
Sewing needle
Black sewing thread
2xblack beads around 1/4 in (0.5cm) in diameter.

TENSION

22 sts and 24 rounds to 4 in (10cm) over single crochet using 3 mm hook.

How to make Snake

The jaw and mouth are crocheted in pieces and joined to form the finised head.  The body starts at the tail; this is increased gradually, working in continuous rounds of single crochet with the pattern forming the snake skin.  The body is stuffed as the work grows in length.  The neck is shaped by decreasing stitches and the head is sew on to the open end. The tongue is made in rows of single crochet and slip stitch and sew into the mouth.  Beads for eyes finish features.

HEAD

JAW :   3 mm hook


Row 1     : Make 12 ch, 1sg into second chain from the hook, 1sg into the next a chain, 2sg into end                      ch. 1sg into each of the reverse side of the next 10 chain [ turn, 22 sts].

Row 2     : (inc)(Rs) : ch1(does not count as a st) 10sg, [sg(3)inc]twice,10sg [turn 26 sts]

Row 3     : (inc) : ch1 (does not count as st), 11sg,[sg(3)inc],2sg,[sg3(inc)],11sg.  [turn 30 sts]

Row 4     : (inc) : ch 1 (does not count as st), 12sg [sg(3)inc)],4sg,sg(3)inc,12  [turn 34 sts]

Row 5-9   : ch 1 work 1sg in each sg, turn and fasten off. Make one more piece to match the first.


BACK OF HEAD

Row 1     : (inc) : 1 sg into the first sg to join. other end of each jaw piece. 1sg into each of the next                        35sg.

Row 2-4   : Work 1 sg in each sg shape back of head.

Row 5     : (dec): sg(2)dec, 2sg 9 times totally [27 sts]

Row 6     : Work 1sg in each stitch.

Row 7     : (dec) : sg(2)dec, 1sg 9 times [18 sts]

Row 8     : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Row 9     : (dec) : sg(2)dec,1sg 6 times [12 sts].
                  slip st, to the next stitch and fasten off, leaving a long length of yarn at the end.

MOUTH

Step 1    : with 3 mm hook in pink make 2 pieces as for the jaw, working rows 1-6 only.

Step 2    : With right sides together, stitch along the straight edges to join.


ATTACH MOUTH

join the yarn to the pink mouth at the edge of the seam just stitched.  with wrong sides together, match the stitches of both the mouth and jaw pieces, Insert the hook under both loops of the first single of the mouth first, then under both loops of the first single of the jaw and work 1 single to join the 2 stitches.  continue in this way, working together each of the 68 single from both pieces at the same time being sure to insert the hook into a double crochet of the mouth first and then jaw. Fasten off.


BODY

Row 1     : Put 6 Single into the magic ring

Row 2     : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Row 3     : (Inc) [Sg (2) inc ,1 sg] 3 times [totally 9 Stitches]

Row 4-6   : Work 1 sg in each Stitch

Row 7     : (inc) : (sg(2)inc,2sg] 3 times [12 stitches]

Row 8-10  : Work 1sg in each Stitch

Row 11    : (inc): [sg(2)inc, 3sg] 3 times [15 stitches]

Row 12-15 : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Row 16    : (inc): [sg(2)inc,4sg] 3 times [18 stitches]

Row 17-20 : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Row 21    : (inc): [ sg(2)inc,5sg] 3 times [21 stitches]

Row 22-25 : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Row 26    : (inc):[sg(2)inc, 6sg] 3 times [24 stitches]

Row 27-30 : Work 1 sg in each stitch

row 31    : (inc): [sg(2)inc,7sg] 3 times [27 stitches]

Row 32-35 : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Row 36     : [sg(2)inc,8sg] 3 times [ 30 Stitches]

Row 37-40 : Work 1 sg in each stitch


BODY PATTERN

NOTES
As the stitches are made by missing rows, the loop on the hook should be extended upto the level of the row being workd.

Join in tHe Next colour by inserting the hook into the next single crochet, then catch A and draw back through the stitch ( 2 loops on hook), Catch B and draw trough boyh loopd on the hook.


Round 1     : With B, [1 sg into the next sg, 1 sg into the next sg 1 row down, 1 sg into the next sg 2                         rows down. 1 sg into the next sg 3 rows down, 1 sg into the next sg 2 rows down, 1 sg                         into the next sg 1 rows down] totally 5 times.

Round 2-4   : work 1 sg into each stitch. Finish the last round 1st before the first sg on round 1 of the                        pattern.  join in the next colour by inserting the hook into the next single, then catch                              yarn B and draw back through the stitch [ 2 loops on hook], catch yarn A and draw                             through both loops on the hook.

Round 5     : With A [ 1 sg into the next sg 3 rows down, 1 sg into the next sg 2 rows down, 1 sg into                       the next sg 1 row down, 1 sg into the next sg, 1sg into the next single 1 row down, 1sg                         into the next sg 2 rows down]  Totally 5 times.

Round 6-8   : Work 1 sg into each sg.  finish the last round 1 stitch before the first sg on round 5 of                             the pattern,  join in c in the same way as before.

Round 9-12  : As round 1-4 in c

Round 13-16 : As rounds 5-8 in A. These 16 rounds from the pattern of the snakes body.  Repeat                                these rounds 15 more times, these rounds 1-8 once more finishing with yarn A. Stuff                            the body as you work every 8-12 in (20-30 cm), but not too firmly


SHAPE NECK

Round 1     : (dec) : [sg2dec,8 sg ] 3 times.  Totally 27 stitches

Round 2-3   : Work 1 sg in each stitch

Round 4     : (dec) : [sg2dec,7sg]3 times.  Totally 24 stitches.

Round 5-6   : Work 1 sg in each Stitch. Slip stitch to the next stitch, leaving a long length of yarn at                           the end.


TONGUE

With 2.5 mm hook and Dk yarn in red.  Make 30 ch, leaving a long length of yarn at the          beginning.

Row 1     : Sl stitch into second ch from the hook, sl.st into the next 4 ch , 1sg into each of the next                       24ch, turn.   Totally 24 stitches

Row 2     : (Right side): sl.st into each of the next 24 sg, turn.

Row 3     : Make 6ch sl.st into second chain from the hook, sl.st into next 4ch, sl.st into next stitch                        and fasten off.


MAKING UP

Head     :  Stuff the head, filling the upper and lower jaw but keeping the pink inside of the mouth                         flat.  Thread the yarn length left after shaping the back of the head throug the last round of                   stitches, gather up the opening and stitch to secure.

Body     : Stuff the rest of the body, filling it right up to the edge of the next. with the length of yarn                     after fastening off, sew the body to the head, stitching all around the neck edge and adding                   a little extra stuffing if necessary before closing.

Tongue   : Weave in the ends of the tongue. using the length of yarn left at the beginning, stitch to the                   inside of the mouth to the centre of the seam joining the 2 mouth pieces.  sew the beads in                   place for the eyes. Alternatively embroider french knots using Dk yarn in block for Eyes.
